Altars for Alice

Our dear friend and collaborator Alice Wong passed about a year ago, on November 14, 2025. In this past year, we have grieved and processed this profound loss, both personal and collective, by gathering, making, and trying to live by Alice’s example. She is our ancestor and an important part of our lineage.

Alice still feels very much with us, and her memory is in everything we do. We invite you to join us in honoring Alice’s memory by crafting an altar, which you can share at the hashtag #AltarsForAlice and tag us if you would like it to be re-shared. An altar is an intentional space for remembrance and connection. In crafting your altar, you might think about the role Alice played in your life.Perhaps her writing helped you understand something in a new way. Perhaps she was a community mentor or guide to you. Perhaps you knew her personally. Your altar can include images, objects, tokens, symbols, flowers, foods, candles, or whatever else feels appropriate. Your altar can also include other ancestors and disabled people who have shaped you and your lineage. Your altar can be physical or digital.

As part of our offering for your altar, we would like to share a project that Alice initiated and that the two of us have worked to complete in the last year since her death. The Disabled Oracles deck is a gentle offering for disabled power and ancestral remembrance in a world that tries to erase us. It was part of Alice’s project of leaving traces of herself and other disabled people for the historical record, so that disabled wisdom and experience could continue even after our physical bodies have transitioned. Alice got to see the early iteration of the Disabled Oracles deck about a month before she passed. We have now put the finishing touches on it.

On our website, https://societyofdisabledoracles.com, you can find each card to download. You can also use these cards to do readings that answer your thorny questions, or to connect to disabled people past and future. Each card features an archetype chosen by Alice with questions on the back for self-reflection.

We are working on finding a good print option for distribution. In the meantime, feel free to print at home, create a digital collage, or draw your own representation. Please do not sell or monetize these cards, however. It was Alice’s wish from the beginning that the cards not be appropriated by capitalism and she gave specific directions about this.
